Dr. Erin Perry, Associate Professor,
Animal Science Food and Nutrition, Southern Illinois University
Dr. Erin Perry is an Associate Professor in Animal Sciences at Southern Illinois University. Her research program combines industry, government, and academic collaborations to produce student-centered training and career opportunities. Dr. Perry’s canine research utilizes her experiences as a canine handler for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and places a particular emphasis on hazards faced by working dogs in the field. Dr. Perry has authored and co-authored multiple studies aimed at improving the health and performance of our canine partners.
Dr. Perry’s equine research is fueled by a life-long passion for horses and almost a decade of experience working with Purina Animal Nutrition. Dr. Perry has developed an extensive equine nutrition research program which has included microbial assessments of the equine gastrointestinal tract and is currently focused on understanding factors associated with equine palatability. These studies may help to improve feed and medication acceptance by hospitalized horses and offer excellent research training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students alike.
Dr. Perry’s work, both canine and equine, has resulted in numerous invitations to speak at national and international conferences. Students in the Perry Lab are given opportunities to attend those conferences as well and are oftentimes given opportunities to present the results of their student projects.
