IAW at Ag Legislative Day 2020
Attending Agriculture Legislative Day is one of several highlights in the Agri-Women year. The morning offers a chance to make personal connections with peers in agricultural organizations from around the state. Being around fellow Agri-Women is ALWAYS energizing. And speaking with legislators first hand to learn their point of view and motivations is probably the most valuable takeaway from the event.
We were reminded by a state senator that no one should assume they are aware of amendments or features of every bill. Several THOUSAND bills are introduced each legislative session. Sharing our perspective on various bills and general issues is absolutely necessary.

Each year we see many bills that appear to be motivated by good intentions, but lawmakers need to hear from people who have to make and to grow things, under variable circumstances, to understand why good intentions don’t always make good policy.
My key take away was to make sure you are talking to those in your districts and discussing matters that are important. It makes a huge difference and they want to know what is important to those they are serving. Don’t be afraid to contact them if you feel strongly about a certain topic. They are there to be your voice!

Ag Legislative day is always a great experience. We were able to meet with Legislators that were interested in our opinions and thoughts and ideas. Each of them encouraged us to reach out to them at any time with follow-up information. We had candid conversations in regards to the process of passing legislation. They welcome any information to help them make educated votes.
